DURHAM, N.C. - Duke's varsity eight crew was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week after winning their cup last Sunday at the 2012 Knecht Cup, on Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
The crew of Caroline Kiritsy, Kathy Smithwick, Katie Burke, Emily Theys, Rory Erickson-Kulas, Tara Dalton, Laura Sciarrino, Grace Cassidy and Claire Vannelli swept their competition in three races, winning their first heat with a time of 6:40.06 to advance to the semifinal. Then in the semifinals, the Blue Devils finished 14 seconds ahead of their competition, crossing the finish line at 6:32.85 to beat Boston College and Drexel.
The Blue Devils then took to the water on Sunday for their final race, the Grand Cup. Posting their fastest time of the season, 6:25.69, Duke captured first place to edge Bucknell by 1.29 seconds. Buffalo (6:34.78) came in third with Wisconsin (6:39.10) and Boston College (6:40.01) rounding out the top five.
The Blue Devils will return to action this weekend, April 21, for the 2012 ACC Championship in Clemson, S.C. on Lake Hartwell.
