LAKE MONTICELLO, Va. – The third varsity eight broke the seven-minute barrier and clocked its fastest time of the season at the UVA Invite Saturday morning on Lake Monticello.

The Duke 3V8 set a season best in their first race, logging a 7:08.7 against Syracuse and bettered that mark with a 6:59.5 in their second matchup against two Virginia boats. The finish was just six-tenths of a second behind the 3V8 from No. 5 Virginia, which posted a 6:58.9. Duke’s sub-seven minute performance was Duke’s third-fastest time for all boats Saturday, trailing only the varsity eight.

“We have a really good boat dynamic and going down the course,” said sophomore Dana Lerro of the 3V8. “You can tell that the trust we had for each other put us in a really good position to do well. Going forward, we are really excited to be able to practice with more consistent lineups and improve upon that.”

Samantha Bowman, coxswain of the 3V8, echoed Lerro.

“We had awesome confidence in each other in the second race that gave us the power to be sixth-tenths (of a second) off UVA,” she said. “We are stoked to see what this boat can do at ACCs.”

In the varsity eight, Duke trailed Syracuse by under five seconds in the opening V8 showdown, clocking a 6:52.9 to Syracuse’s 6:48.2 in the first race of the day. The group rebounded to post a 6:46.4 against Michigan State in their second race, though the Spartans finished first with a time of 6:38.2.

“I feel like the varsity eight has really got a good race mentality going on, and I think we could really make something happen at ACCs in 2 weeks,” said senior Grace Cassidy. “In the first race, we absolutely went after it and stayed with Syracuse past the 1k. In the second race, we tried to hold a more sustainable rate and it paid off. We did a much better job sustaining speed the whole race.”

The Blue Devils, who will now have three weeks to prepare for the ACC Championships on May 16-17, also took on Syracuse and Michigan State in the second varsity eight and varsity four. Duke placed second in those four races – two per boat – to round out the day.

“I think it was really beneficial to see two solid ACC teams before going into the postseason,” said junior Patricia Kolman of the 2V8. “We are definitely humbled, but it puts things into perspective and we have a good grasp on what's waiting for us when we get to Clemson for ACCs. I think everyone feels ready to do whatever it takes to elevate in any way we can.”

Duke will now prepare for the ACC Championships, where it has notched top-three finishes in 11 of the past 12 championships. This year’s regatta will feature a two-day format for the first time, coinciding with the addition of Notre Dame and Syracuse to the ACC lineup.
