CLEMSON, S.C. – Duke will move on to the Grand Final in all four events at the ACC Championship after clocking top-six overall times in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four on the first day of competition Friday on Lake Hartwell.
Racing in a two-day format at the conference championship for the first time in ACC history, Duke lined up in four-boat heats in those three races posted finishes of second in the varsity four (7:52.9) and third in the varsity eight (6:56.3) and second varsity eight (7:10.8). Virginia and Notre Dame, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, and racing in opposite heats in each event, combined to win all six races on the first day of competition, while the Cavaliers had the best times in all three events.
Duke’s varsity four set the tone early, storming past Clemson to finish more than 10 seconds ahead of the Tigers for second place in the heat in the day’s opening race. The Blue Devil crew of coxswain Karla Beltran and rowers Allison Beattie, Phoebe Donovan, Sophia Staal and Julie Rohde trailed only top-seeded and fifth-ranked Virginia, which logged a 7:39.8 for the event’s fastest time. Duke’s V4 will take the third lane in Saturday’s Grand Final.
