DURHAM, N.C. – Duke juniors Sophia Staal and Claire Vannelli and sophomore Mary Wilson were named CRCA Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association, the organization announced.

To be named a CRCA Scholar-Athlete the student-athlete must have a 3.5 cumulative or higher GPA for her career through the 2013 fall semester; meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution; be in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility; and been a member of her institution’s NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or racing in a regional event.

A member of Duke’s varsity eight, Vannelli is a two-time selection to the CRCA Scholar-Athlete squad. Wilson competed primarily with Duke’s second varsity eight this year and received scholar-athlete recognition for the first time in her career. Staal was a member of Duke's varsity four and helped that boat clinch a third-place finish at the ACC Championship. Duke has now placed multiple rowers on the CRCA Scholar-Athlete team for the fourth consecutive season.

Duke concluded the 2013-14 rowing season with a fifth-place finish at the ACC Championship on May 16-17 in Clemson, S.C. The Duke varsity eight advanced to the Grand Final and placed fifth overall at the event.
