LONDON - Duke's Nick McCrory shined under pressure Saturday morning, putting on an impressive performance in the semifinals of the men's 10-meter platform competition to earn one of 12 qualifying spots for the event finals at the 2012 Olympic Games.

After placing eighth with a strong showing in Friday's preliminaries, McCrory improved his scores on five of his six dives in Saturday's semifinals to total 506.50 points, good for seventh overall. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native will contend for his second medal of the Olympic Games in the 10-meter finals Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. EST.

McCrory was in 13th place at the end of the second round, scoring a combined 160.00 points on his first two dives of the morning. His armstand back double somersault with 1 ½ twists in the second round was awarded a score of 83.20 from the judges, including one 9.0.

The third round of action saw McCrory move up to 12th, as he earned 83.25 points on a forward 4 ½ somersault in the tuck position for a 3.7 degree of difficulty. He then averaged 9.0s on his reverse 3 ½ somersault, bringing his total score to 332.35 to put him in 11th place with two dives remaining.

A back 3 ½ somersault in the tuck position for a 3.3 degree of difficulty in the fifth round garnered McCrory 84.15 points for a total score of 416.50, moving him into 10th place. He then emphatically secured a spot in the event finals, earning his highest score of the day at 90.00 on a back 2 ½ somersault with 2 ½ twists in the pike position to conclude the semifinals in seventh place with a total score of 506.50.

Fellow American David Boudia will join McCrory in the 10-meter finals after taking third in the semifinals with a score of 531.15. China's Qui Bo and Lin Yue continue to the lead the field after finishing first and second, respectively, in the preliminaries and semifinals.
