DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke Swimming and Diving team wrapped up competition for 2012 at the Tennessee Invitational and Nike Cup this past weekend. Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior freestyle swimmer Matt Carder to learn more about the Virginia Beach, Va., native.
GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Matt Carder: Proudest moment here was probably ACCs my sophomore year, watching our 200 free relay win. That was the first time we won a relay or an event at ACCs and it was really great to be a part of that, congratulate the guys and cheer them on.
GoDuke.com: What is the most misunderstood thing about swimming?
MC: Probably that we actually enjoy spending a lot of time in the water. People ask when I go home, if I want to go to the pool and I don't really ever want to go to the pool more than I have to.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite part about being a Duke student-athlete?
MC: The sense of family and community that you have when you are a student-athlete here. Knowing that you share that bond with everyone else on your team and other teams too, and you always will.
GoDuke.com: What was your favorite food when you were a child?
MC: I was a picky eater when I was younger. If I went to a restaurant, I would order chicken fingers or chicken nuggets. That was pretty much a go-to.
GoDuke.com: What sport other than your own would you play if you had the opportunity?
MC: Probably soccer. I played when I was younger, but I enjoy watching it a lot.
GoDuke.com: Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
MC: Honestly, I would say my mom. We have a pretty close relationship now. Even though we got into a lot of arguments when I was younger in high school, I think that has paid off now.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any hidden talents?
MC: Not really.
GoDuke.com: What is one possession you can't live without?
MC: I would say my headphones, because I listen to music wherever I go and if I go somewhere and don't have them I am really annoyed.
GoDuke.com: Mountains or Beach?
MC: Definitely the beach. I am from Virginia Beach.
GoDuke.com: Cats or dogs?
MC: Dogs. I have always grown up with dogs.
