GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Emily Barber: My sophomore year at ACCs, everyone in the breaststroke training group did incredible - boys and girls. I was just really proud of everyone. It was so exciting how well everyone did.
GoDuke.com: What is the most misunderstood thing about swimming?
EB: People think because we're great athletes in the pool, it means that we're great athletes out of the pool. I'd say we're not [laughs]. My dad always says that we're fish out of water. I think that's a pretty good explanation for us on land.
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite part about being a Duke student-athlete?
EB: I'm extremely proud to walk around with Duke swimming and diving stuff on. Just to see everyone else on campus wear their athletic clothing, it's awesome because this is an incredible school academically and athletically, and it's cool to be a part of both.
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite class at Duke?
EB: Abnormal Psychology. I'm a psych major, so I like that kind of stuff.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite spot on campus?
EB: The Loop because I've spent so much time there the last three years.
GoDuke.com: Are there any words of wisdom you'd like to pass along to freshmen and future Blue Devils?
EB: I remember when I was a freshman, the seniors said, 'Watch out, it goes so quick.' I didn't really listen to them. Now I'm a senior, and I just cannot believe how quickly it flew by. So I'd say enjoy every moment of it.
GoDuke.com: When did you first start swimming?
EB: I started when I was seven, and I swam for a YMCA and didn't take it seriously because I played a bunch of other sports. It was fun, but I didn't get serious about it until I was a junior in high school, and then I really started loving it.
GoDuke.com: If you weren't a swimmer, what other sport would you try?
EB: Field hockey. I played that for a while and I really loved it.
GoDuke.com: Who has been the biggest influence on your life?
EB: My parents. They've been really incredible, so supportive. My dad was a swimmer, so he knows everything about the sport.
GoDuke.com: If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
EB: I've always wanted to go to Ireland.
GoDuke.com: If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
