DURHAM, N.C. - After posting top three finishes in the AT&T Diving Grand Prix last weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duke diver's Abby Johnston and Nick McCrory will travel to Tallahassee this weekend to fight for the remaining spots on the men's and women's synchronized teams for the USA roster in the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai this summer.
McCrory, a Chapel Hill, N.C., native has already punched his card for China, capturing the men's 10-meter platform individual event along with diver David Boudia. The two will once again team up to compete in the synchronized event, in hopes of locking down the final open spots in the roster. Last weekend McCrory and Boudia posted a third place finish at the AT&T Grand Prix in the synchronized platform competition.
Johnston looks to grab the last available spot in the women's three-meter synchronized team. Missing the cut for the individual event, the Upper Arlington, Ohio, native will again pair with Christina Loukas, Kassidy Cook and Kelci Bryant in the preliminary and semifinal rounds. The team with the highest score will go on to the finals. Johnston and Loukas grabbed first place last weekend at the AT&T Grand Prix, the first gold in an international competition of Johnston.
The preliminary and semifinal rounds for these two events will be on Friday, May 13, with the finals starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 15.
