TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - With the conclusion of the USA Diving World qualifiers on Sunday, Duke's own Nick McCrory and Abby Johnston pulled out top performances, garnering spots in the World Championship team.
"Nick and Abby had a great two week," head diving coach Drew Johansen said. "They have competed against the best divers in the world. Not many were missing from this competition. They both performed unbelievably well."
Over the course of the four day competition, six divers were added to the squad.Johnston collected a spot as a representative for the women's one-meter event. Averaging nine's on her last dive of the competition on Saturday, the Upper Arlington, Ohio native took first with a final score of 590.75.
"In the one-meter individual, Abby just dominated the first five dives," said Johansen. "She was not going to be denied a spot on the team. She was totally in control, and made sure no dives were missed. Her making the team was totally dependent on her, and I think she thrived on that."
McCrory and diving partner David Boudia took the top spot in the men's 10-meter synchronized competition on Sunday. Already securing their spots as individual representatives on the men's 10-meter event, the two pulled together a first place performance highlighted by a final dive that earned seven tens for 105.84 points. Their total performance topped 1448.58 points.
"In the three dives Nick and David did together, each time they dove they had another personal best," said Johansen. "They had some of the highest scores in the world."
