FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Former Duke swimming All-American and 2011 graduate Ashley Twichell captured first place at the 2011 5K Open Water National Championship last week in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Twichell, a native of Fayetteville, N.Y., claimed top honors with a time of 58:11.87 to outdistance runner-up Becca Mann, who finished in 58:22.02.

"My strategy worked well today," Twichell told USA Swimming following the race.  "I wanted to stay strong for about three-quarters of the race then pick up and try to break away."

Twichell will compete as a member of the USA Championship Team at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China on July 16-31.
