McCrory Wins 1-Meter to Kick Off Zone Championships

KNOXVILLE, TENN. - Junior Nick McCrory secured a trip to the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Monday, winning the men's 1-meter springboard diving title on the first day of the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at the University of Tennessee's Allan Jones Aquatic Center.

After leading the field of 33 divers in the preliminary round with a score of 423.15, McCrory totaled 397.65 points in the event final to finish the afternoon with a combined score of 820.80 and wrap up one of five qualifying spots for the Men's NCAA Championships. His highest-scoring dive of the day came in the fourth round of the final, when he earned a score of 81.00 from the judges on a back 2 ½ somersault in the tuck position.  

Senior Jordan Long turned in a ninth-place finish in the men's 1-meter final for his highest career finish at the Zone Championships meet. Long totaled 610.35 points over two rounds of diving, scoring 314.1 points in the event final. He concluded the afternoon with an inward 2 ½ somersault in the tuck position which received a score of 65.10.  

Also advancing to the men's 1-meter final were freshman Deon Reid and sophomore Clay Pinckney, who came in 11th and 17th, respectively. Reid registered a personal-best score of 309.15 in the event finals to finish the afternoon with a total score of 604.00, while Pinckney garnered 277.30 points in the preliminaries and a score of 266.8 in the final to total 544.10 points.

In the preliminaries of the women's 3-meter springboard competition, freshman Kendall McClenney posted a season-best mark of 270.05 to finish 20th and classmate Jaimee Gundry totaled 227.00 points to come in 33rd.

The NCAA Zone B Diving Championships continue Tuesday with the preliminaries and finals of the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter events, beginning at 11 a.m. Live results and live video will be available throughout the day.
