DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Christine Wixted to learn more about the Greenwood Village, Colo., native.
GoDuke.com: Name your three favorite things about being a student-athlete at Duke.
Christine Wixted: The people – being surrounded by other great athletes every day. The coaches – everyone I’ve gotten to work with including the swim coaches and Carl [Christensen] in the weight room. And just being able to be at an institution that excels in athletics as well as academics really makes me feel like I’m at the best place in the country.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite competition-related memory?
CW: Last year when I broke a minute in the 100 breast. That was one of my goals coming into school so it was great to do it at a big meet like [ACCs]. And my parents were there so it was nice to look up and see them in the stands. Having everyone there made it awesome.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite memory away from the pool?
CW: Just hanging out with the team, especially when we stay here for fall break or we’re here a week early when school starts in the spring. They’re like a second family, so having them around and spending time being goofy with them has been fun.
GoDuke.com: Describe head coach Dan Colella in three words.
CW: Competitive but calm and goofy.
GoDuke.com: Name three things that motivate you to perform.
CW: My teammates, my competitive drive and just wanting to succeed and not let other people down.
GoDuke.com: Were there any swimmers you modeled yourself after growing up?
CW: I didn’t really have any swimming heroes. I got into swimming kind of late as a kid. But just seeing athletes in other sports like Michael Jordan and John Elway because I’m from Colorado – just seeing them perform the way they did.
GoDuke.com: Name three places you would travel to if you could.
CW: Italy, Australia and New Zealand.
GoDuke.com: What are your three favorite things about the sport of swimming?
CW: The feeling you get after a good workout, swimming outside when you can and racing.
