DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, sat down with senior Tricia Leeson to learn more about the Bethlehem, Pa., native. What are your three favorite things about being a student athlete at Duke?
Tricia Leeson: One of my favorite things is the competitive atmosphere that Duke University holds in academics and athletics. It’s encompassed in our student-athletes who preform not only in our athletics but also in our academics. The second thing I like is that we are a small enough university that a lot of the athletes know each other. We are all a big family but have our own separate families under our sports. We are all really supportive of each other in our individual sports. The third thing I like about being a Duke student-athlete is that this isn’t a university where they look down upon athletes, but they actually celebrate them. What is your favorite memory related to competition?
TL: My favorite is when we are able to see people who have been injured for a really long time come back from surgeries being able to finally swim their first race again. Whether not they are doing well or going fast, they are finally able to compete in a swim meet which is a really big deal. What is your favorite memory not related to competition?
TL: When assistant coach, Dawn Kane, fell in the pool during practice two years ago. What are some of your favorite things about the sport of swimming?
TL: I like how it is an individual sport but it’s also a team sport. Your performance impacts the entire team as a whole, so there is a lot more pressure to perform well. I love our team, our atmosphere. Swimming is really underrated and many people don’t understand the type of dedication that we put into the sport, which I’m not saying other sports don’t have, but swimming teaches you a lot about yourself because it’s a lot of dedication. Describe yourself in three words?
TL: Annoying, loud and spunky. Name three things you couldn’t live without as a kid?
TL: Easy Bake oven, my dog and Christmas. What are some of your favorite restaurants in Durham?
TL: Torero’s, Bull City Burger, Monuts, the Washington Duke and Dos Perros. Who are three people, dead or alive, you would have dinner with if you could?
TL: Mother Teresa, Ellen DeGeneres and Winston Churchill.
