Personal-Best Swims Mark First Day of VT Invite

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - Several Blue Devil swimmers recorded new personal and season bests Saturday on the first day of competition at the 2012 Virginia Tech Invitational, held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, the site of the 2012 ACC Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.

Two Duke freshmen opened up the evening finals session with a pair of personal bests in the 200 free, as Michael Donnalley (1:41.38) and Tyler Toren (1:41.87) tied for sixth and finished eighth, respectively. Donnalley also notched the program's best time of the season in the morning preliminaries of the event, swimming 1:41.17.

Junior Chris Cirillo turned in a third-place performance in the finals of the 100 back, touching in 49.14 for a new personal best and Duke's fastest time of the season. Fellow junior Evan Schwartz topped his previous best in the 100 breast, clocking 56.97 in the finals to come in sixth, while junior Jacob Bieze tied for fifth in the 100 fly finals at 50.94. Bieze also registered a new personal best in the morning prelims, swimming 50.54.

In the finals of the 500 free, freshman Clay Sanders recorded Duke's fourth-best time of the season in a fourth-place finish (4:36.24), and fellow rookie Stefan Knight closed out the evening with a personal-best showing in the 50 free at 20.79 to come in second.

The invitational concludes on Sunday, Feb. 5 with the swimming of the 100 free, 200 breast, 200 back, 200 fly, 200 IM and the 1,650 free. Morning preliminaries are set to begin in Christiansburg at 10 a.m., followed by the evening finals session at 4 p.m.
