Tuben earned a spot in the championship final of the 100 butterfly after taking eighth overall in the event preliminaries. His 46.35 clocking in the prelims crushed his own school record of 46.69 and moved him up five spots from his 13th-place seeding.
In the championship final, Tuben closed out his career at Duke in exciting fashion, touching in 46.84 to place eighth in the nation and score 11 points for the Blue Devils. He garnered first team All-America honors with his top-eight finish, becoming the sixth Blue Devil in program history to earn All-America distinction.
After recording a time of 53.11 in a 12th-place showing in the 100 breaststroke during the morning preliminaries, Safronczyk returned to the pool Friday evening to compete in the consolation final. The evening session saw Safronczyk post a time of 53.71 to take 15th in the nation for honorable mention All-America honors.
Tuben and Safronczyk's performances garrnered 13 points to put Duke in 26th place overall through two days of action in Federal Way,Wash.
Safronczyk is slated to compete on the final day of the NCAA Championships Saturday in the 200 breaststroke. The program record holder in the event (1:57.03), Safronczyk earned All-ACC honors in the 200 breaststroke in a second-place finish at the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. Saturday's preliminaries will get underway at 11 a.m. PST (2 p.m. EST), followed by the finals at 7 p.m. PST (10 p.m. PST). Both sessions will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com.
