Blue Devil Men Open Action at ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Competition began at the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships Wednesday with the first two events of the four-day meet.

Duke's 200-yard medley relay team of junior Steven Gasparini, junior Hunter Knight, freshman Sam Skinner and senior Ben Hwang clocked a season-best time of 1:27.42 to place seventh of eight squads. Their mark also surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the event.

In the second event of the evening, the 800 freestyle relay, the team of senior Matt Carder, sophomore Michael Donnalley, Skinner and sophomore Stefan Knight got off to a fast start but was disqualified on an early takeoff.

Excluding the diving events, the Blue Devils are in eighth place after the first day of competition with a total of 24 points. Florida State leads the field with 70 points, while Virginia (68) is in second and Virginia Tech (66) and North Carolina (66) are tied for third.

Duke scored 91 points in the diving events last week, with junior Nick McCrory sweeping the titles in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform competitions.

The ACC Championships continue Thursday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and the 50 freestyle. The finals of all three individual events, as well as the 200 freestyle relay, will begin at 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The ACC Digital Network and ESPN3 will both carry live streaming of Thursday's finals session. Live results will also be available for Thursday's preliminaries and finals.
