Box Score

WAUWATOSA, Wis.—Duke raced out to a 10-1 first-quarter lead and never looked back en route to a 19-3 victory over first-year program Marquette in front of 4,202 fans at Hart Park in its men’s lacrosse regular season finale. Freshmen Myles Jones and Case Matheis both finished with five points apiece from three goals and two assists.

Duke (12-5) got off to a fast start with three goals in the opening 1:43. The first tally of the afternoon came four seconds in off the stick of junior Brendan Fowler. The Wantagh, N.Y., native won the opening faceoff and raced right down the field to score his third goal of the year.

Senior Jake Tripucka and freshman Myles Jones added tallies within 33 seconds of each other to make it 3-0 as the Blue Devils cruised to a 10-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Jones, juniors Jordan Wolf and Josh Dionne both finished with two goals apiece in the opening frame, while seven different players registered an assist. In goal, Kyle Turri had three saves as the Blue Devils’ defense held Marquette (5-8) to just seven shots overall in the quarter.

The scoring pace slowed markedly in the second quarter with Duke edging the Golden Eagles 2-1 on goals from sophomore Kyle Keenan and Matheis. Golden Eagles’ Cullen Cassidy stopped the 14:17 scoring drought 5:57 into the second quarter, but Marquette managed just 13 shots in the half.

The trend continued in the third and fourth quarters with Dionne adding two more scores to his total to four for the game, while Class netted one more goal to push his season total to 10 for the year. His three points for the day were a career-best.

Defensively, Duke was strong in holding Marquette without goals for stretches of 14:17, 18:56 and 20:07. The three goals allowed were tied for the fewest by the Blue Devils this season – Mercer also had three. Kyle Whitlow and Ben Dorvak also added goals for the Golden Eagles.

Overall, seven different Blue Devils registered career-best performances. Rookie Jamie Ikeda picked up a season-best two ground balls, while Joe Kruy registered his first career caused turnover. Justin George picked up a career-high two ground balls and senior Spencer Peterson corralled two loose balls to surpass his previous career-best mark. In goal, Ben Krebs made a career-high four saves in 20:07 of action.

Fowler finished 11-of-18 from the X with eight ground balls and a goal. Turri, Luka Aaron and Krebs combined for 10 saves in the game with Turri also grabbing four ground balls. Duke finished with a 45-29 edge in ground balls.

JJ Sagl had six saves between the pipes for the Golden Eagles, while Matt Barone made two saves in 22 minutes of action.

The Blue Devils will await their NCAA fate tonight on the NCAA Tournament selection show at 9 p.m., on ESPNU. The first round of the tournament will be held May 11 or May 12 on the top eight seeds’ campus sites.
