Anthony Boone enters the 2013 season as Duke’s starting quarterback, filling a role that was held for the previous three seasons by Sean Renfree, now a member of the Atlanta Falcons. Boone is no stranger to the position, having appeared in 22 games, including one start, while completing 79-of-148 passes (.534) for 829 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Also a factor in the run game, Boone has turned 70 career rushes into 211 yards and six touchdowns.DURHAM -- Redshirt junior
Boone directed Duke to victories over Wake Forest and Virginia in back-to-back weeks last season in place of an injured Renfree. Against Wake Forest on Sept. 29, Boone took over late in the third quarter with the score tied at 20-20 and Renfree out of the game with an injury. He ran in the winning score from four yards out and went on to hit 8-of-11 passes for 54 yards and no turnovers to hold off a late Wake Forest charge in the 34-27 win. He drew the start in next week’s 42-17 win over Virginia, throwing for 212 yards and four touchdown passes without a turnover.
Duke’s coaching staff has praised Boone’s throwing and running ability as well as his leadership. Duke fans have less than two weeks to see the Monroe, N.C., native lead the Blue Devils into their season opener against N.C. Central on Saturday, August 31 at 4 p.m. in Wallace Wade Stadium.
