DURHAM, N.C. - Blue Devil standouts Mollie Pathman and Kelly Cobb played alongside the rest of the United States U-20 women's soccer team against China PR early this morning in their second game of the U-20 Women's World Cup, and battled to a 1-1 draw in Hiroshima, Japan. The U.S. (1-0-1) has now inched closer to a quarterfinal berth with the draw and currently sits in second place in Group D with four points.
Both Pathman and Cobb started the match as defender and forward, respectively, for the United States, who were 14-1 in international play in 2012 going into the match.
A native of Durham, N.C., Pathman played the full 90 minutes for the United States and was an integral part of the goal scored by the U.S. In the 36th minute, Pathman dribbled through the midfield and slid a through ball towards the end line to Kealia Ohai. Ohai then played a perfect ball across the six-yard box to an on running Maya Hayes, who placed the ball in the corner with her right foot tying the game at 1-1. In addition to helping in the attack, Pathman has helped a United States defense that has only allowed four goals in 15 international matches this year.
Cobb, who was a member of the Soccer America All-Freshman First Team, Second Team All-Southeast Region and ACC All-Freshman Team last season, played the entire first half, and created a number of very dangerous opportunities for the U.S, who outshot China 17-3 for the game. After a solid first half, Cobb was substituted in the 46th minute for Chioma Ubogagu.
The U.S. can advance to the quarterfinals with a win or a draw against Germany in their final Group D match on Monday, Aug. 27 at 2:50 a.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.
