Summer McKeehan, a native of Winston-Salem, NC, joined the Duke Athletic Medicine staff in July of 2001 and serves as the program’s Associate Athletic Trainer. Her duties include working primarily with the women’s basketball program while acting as the insurance coordinator for the Athletic Medicine department.

McKeehan joined the Blue Devils staff after graduating from the University of Utah with her Master of Science degree in 2001. During her time at the University of Utah, she volunteered as the athletic trainer for the Women’s Premier Soccer League. Prior to graduating from the University of Utah, she attended Utah State University and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1998.

During the summers of 2010 and 2011, McKeehan served as the team athletic trainer for the USA Basketball U18 Women’s National team and U19 World Championship team. The U18 squad won the FIBA Americas gold medal and the U19 squad won the World Championship in Chile.

In the March 2014 issue of Training and Conditioning, McKeehan published an article detailing a complex case study involving the treatment of stress fractures in a female basketball player. She provided the readers with insight into the patience it takes to treat stress fractures in addition to providing different treatment considerations. Summer has been a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association since 1998 and the North Carolina Athletic Trainer’s Association since 2001.
