Greyserman Places T-4th at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman Max Greyserman opened his collegiate career with a tie for fourth finish after posting an even-par 72 in the final round of Tar Heel Intercollegiate Sunday. Greyserman closed the tournament with a two-under 214 (71-71-72), while Duke placed tied for sixth with an 18-over 882 at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill.

Georgia Tech claimed the tournament title with a 22-under 842 with NC State placing second with a two-under 862. UNC Greensboro finished third at +9, 873 followed by North Carolina (+13, 877), VCU (+17, 881), No. 15 Duke (+18, 882), East Carolina (+18, 882), UNC Wilmington (+20, 884), East Tennessee State (+24, 888) and Davidson (+29, 893).

Seth Reeves (Georgia Tech) captured medalist honors with an eight-under 208 while teammates Richy Werenski (-4, 212) and Ollie Schniederjans (-3, 213) placed second and third, respectively. Greyserman was tied for fourth along with Brandon Dalinka (North Carolina) and Anders Albertson (Georgia Tech) at two-under.

Greyserman got off to a terrific start in the final round with four birdies over the first six holes of play. The Short Hills, N.J., native birdied No. 1 and followed up with birdies on the par 5 third and par 4 fourth holes. He added a birdie on the 533-yard, par 5 sixth hole to get to four-under on the round and surge up the leaderboard. Greyserman slipped back to one-under after three bogeys over a four-hole stretch at the midpoint of the round. He added a birdie on the par 5 13th hole but suffered bogeys on each of the next two holes to fall back to even-par. Greyserman closed out the tournament with three straight pars to secure a top 5 finish.

Junior Michael Ricaurte finished tied for 28th with a five-over 221. In the final round, he posted a four-over 76 with one birdie, 13 pars, three bogeys and a double-bogey.

Yaroslav Merkulov, playing as an individual, fired an even-par 72 Sunday to place tied for 33rd with a seven-over 223. Opening up on the back nine, he birdied No. 12 (par 3) and No. 17 (par 5) to get to two-under on the day. After dropping a stroke with a bogey on No. 18, Merkulov birdied the par 5 third hole to get back to two-under. He suffered a pair of bogeys down the stretch before recovering to par No. 8 and No. 9 for his first even-par round of the season.

Alexander Matlari, a freshman from Germany, shot a seven-over 79 in the final round to tie for 38th overall. After two solid rounds Saturday, Matlari struggled to get things going in the third round finishing with one birdie, nine pars and eight bogeys.

Junior Turner Southey-Gordon recorded a two-over 74 to closed the Tar Heel Intercollegiate tied for 49th with an 11-over 227. He recorded a bogey on No. 2 before playing the next 12 holes at one-under with 11 pars and a birdie on No. 8 (par 3). Southey-Gordon dropped strokes on No. 15 and No. 18 to close out the round at two-over.

Andrew Bieber, a freshman from Cleveland, Ohio, finished 62nd at 15-over after posting a five-over 77. He collected thrid birdies Sunday but also suffered five bogeys and a triple-bogey.

Senior Austin Cody, competing as an individual, registered a seven-over 79 in the final round to finish 78th overall.

Duke returns to action Sept. 20-22 at the Dick's Sporting Goods Collegiate Cup at the Golf Club of Tennessee.


NOTES

*** Greyserman was one of five players to shoot even-par or better in all three rounds.

*** Greyserman shared the tournament lead in par 5 scoring at eight-under ... he recorded six birdies and two eagles on the par 5s at Finley GC.

*** Merkulov and Ricaurte also finished among the tournament leaders in par 5 scoring at three-under.

*** Greyserman recorded 13 birdies overall, fourth-most in the event.

*** Matlari and Merkulov tied for sixth in the 81-player field with 37 pars apiece.
