DURHAM, N.C.-Three. Just three more days until the 2013 Duke men's lacrosse season officially gets underway under the direction of three-time Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year John Danowski. The Blue Devils square off against Denver Feb. 9 at 12 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.

Danowski, in his 31st season as a head coach and seventh as the leader at Duke, is etched the records book as one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history. Sporting a 314-163 career record, the longtime head coach has helped lead the Blue Devils to unprecedented success in his six seasons.  In the process of guiding the Blue Devils to new heights, he has been recognized by his peers  in the ACC as the top coach in the conference in 2007, 2011 and 2012.

On July 21, 2006 Danowski was introduced as Duke's eighth men's lacrosse head coach. Taking over a program in transition, Danowski guided Duke to the finest season in school history. The Blue Devils went 17-3, captured both the ACC and regular season championships, earned the program's first number one seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the national title game. For his efforts, he garnered his first ACC Coach of the Year award and was selected as the Person of the Year by US Lacrosse.

The Blue Devils continued to excel under the watchful eye of Danowski, capturing ACC Tournament titles in 2008 and 2009 and its first NCAA Championship in 2010. The ACC Coach of the Year trophy, however, found its home again in Durham in 2011 after Duke took home the ACC regular season title and advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the fifth straight season. After starting the year 2-2, Duke went on to win seven straight, including a thrilling overtime win over Maryland, en route to its eighth ACC regular season crown.

Danowski earned his second consecutive ACC Coach of the Year honor in a vote of his fellow coaches in 2012 after leading the Blue Devils to both the ACC regular season and tournament titles. The Blue Devils finished 2012 with a 15-5 record and advanced to the NCAA semifinals despite starting the season 3-3 and 0-1 in league action. Duke quickly recovered after its tough start and rattled off 10 straight victories, including one over then No. 1 Virginia.

One of just six Division I head coaches to reach the 300-win plateau, Danowski and the Blue Devils face a tall task in the first game of the 2013 season against preseason No. 9 Denver at 12 p.m., Feb. 9. Duke follows that with a game Sunday, Feb. 10 against Jacksonville at 12 p.m.
