DURHAM, N.C. – A pair of Blue Devils swept Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week accolades for the third time this season following an 18-9 victory over Boston University Sunday, May 5 in the squad's regular season finale. Freshman attacker Kelci Smesko earned the league’s Offensive Player of the Week nod for the first time in her career while sophomore defender Gabby Moise was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this spring.
Smesko led all scorers in the contest with seven points on four goals and three assists, registering new career-highs in both points and goals. The Ridgewood, N.J., native also matched a career-best with three assists and continues to rank second on the team in that category with 16. Smesko also owns four hat tricks on the season as well as five multiple assist games and ranks among the top 15 players in the ACC at 2.47 points per contest.
Duke’s leader in caused turnovers with 24 this year, Moise notched two more Sunday against the Terriers to rank third in the conference with an average of 1.41 caused turnovers per contest. She marked Boston University leading scorer Danielle Etrasco, limiting her to three points. Hailing from Princeton, N.J., Moise is part of a defensive unit that allows just 8.88 goals per game and has held nine opponents to single-digit scoring this season, including holding the Terriers to a nine-goal output in Sunday’s win.
The Blue Devils open first round action of the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship Friday, May 10 at 7:15 p.m. against Princeton in Annapolis, Md. The game will be broadcast live on CBSSports.com.
