DURHAM, N.C. -- Linebackers David Helton and Kelby Brown were named co-Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athletes of the Week after helping lead the Blue Devils to a 13-10 road victory over No. 16 Virginia Tech.
The linebacker tandem spearheaded a Duke defensive unit that held Virginia Tech to a season-low matching 10 points by forcing four turnovers, breaking up 10 passes and limiting the Hokies to just 4-of-18 (.222) on third down. Brown and Helton combined for 33 tackles including two tackles for losses in the win.
Brown registered 14 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss and one interception on the day as Duke defeated a nationally-ranked opponent on the road for the first time since 1971. With Duke nursing a 13-10 lead, he carded the first interception of his career with 4:22 remaining in the game to help seal Duke’s victory as the Hokies would not regain possession.
Helton recorded a career-high 19 tackles, including 13 in the opening half of play, and a pass breakup as Duke became bowl eligible for the second straight season.
Duke, 6-2 overall, is off next Saturday before returning to action Nov. 9 against NC State at Wallace Wade Stadium.
