TIBURON, Calif. – Former Duke swimmer Ashley Twichell placed first among all female finishers Sunday morning at the RCP Tiburon Mile. A one nautical mile race held annually since 1999, the RCP Tiburon starts at San Francisco Bay’s Angel Island and ends in Tiburon.

Twichell clocked a time of 25:09 on her way to winning the event. She finished ninth overall in the field of 55 participants and first among the female swimmers.

A 2011 graduate of Duke, Twichell won a gold medal in the women’s 10K open water swimming event at the World University Games in July. She was also fifth in the women’s 10K open water race at the 2013 U.S. Open Water National Championships in May. A member of the U.S. open water national team in 2011-12 and 2012-13, Twichell previously won the inaugural 5K open water team pursuit at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China. She was an All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle at Duke.
