LAS VEGAS, NEV. -- The Duke men's golf team posted a nine-over 297 during a rain-drenched opening round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters Friday. Freshman Mads Soegaard led the way for the Blue Devils with a one-over 73, while senior Adam Sumrall posted a two-over 74.

California, No. 1 in the Golfstat rankings, holds the opening round lead after shooting a three-under 285. Stanford is one shot back as the two Pac 12 schools were the only two teams to shoot under par in the opening round. Alabama (+1, 289), UCLA (+3, 291) and New Mexico (+3, 291) round out the top 5.

Stanford's Patrick Rodgers fired a six-under 66 Friday and holds a two shot lead over Cory Whitsett (Alabama). James Erkenbeck (New Mexico) and Brandon Hagy (California) are three shots back at three-under.

Soegaard is tied for 19th after carding one birdie, 15 pars and two bogeys in the first round of play. He birdied the par 3 second hole before suffering a bogey on No. 7. Following seven straight pars the Denmark native bogeyed the par 4 15th hole before capping off the day with three more pars.

Sumrall got off to a terrific start with two birdies and seven pars on the front nine. The South Bend, Ind., native remaining at two-under after going bogey-birdie on No. 12 and No. 13. Sumrall suffered a bogey on No. 15 and a double-bogey on No. 17 after returning to the course following a weather delay late in the round. He enters tomorrow's second round tied for 28th with a two-over 74.

Seniors Tim Gornik and Brinson Paolini along with sophomore Michael Ricaurte are tied for 40th after posting three-over 75s on Friday. Gornik, playing as an individual, was at one-under late in his round before suffering a double-bogey and two bogeys over his final five holes of play. Ricaurte led Duke with four birdies on the day but had his round derailed by a pair of double bogeys. Paolini had one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys during his round of 75.

Julian Suri, a senior from St. Augustine, Fla., struggled throughout the day en route to an 83. He had his opening nine holes ruined with a quad-bogey on the par 4 fourth hole. Following a birdie on No. 9, Suri ran into trouble with an eight-over in challenging conditions over his final nine holes of play.

Duke opens second round play on Saturday at 11:27 am (ET) on the back nine of Southern Highlands Golf Club. The Blue Devils will be paired with Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.
