DURHAM, N.C. – Leading 3-0 after five innings, the Blue Devils plated eight in the bottom of the sixth and added two more in the eighth en route to a 13-0 victory over Boston College Friday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Duke (14-13, 4-6 ACC) scored seven or more runs in a single inning for the third time in the past four games with its eight-run sixth against the Eagles. After a strikeout to begin the frame, seven straight Blue Devils reached base before junior Jordan Betts capped off the inning with his fifth home run of the 2013 campaign, this one a two-run shot to left center.

Betts was one of three Blue Devils with multiple hits in the game as the Wilmington, N.C., extended his hit streak to nine games with a 2-for-4 evening at the plate while also adding three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Andy Perez registered his fourth, three-hit game of the year, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Jeff Kremer, who is also enjoying a nine-game hitting streak, went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Sophomore Trent Swart (3-1) was outstanding against the Eagles, tossing seven scoreless innings. The Duke left-hander allowed just two hits – both singles – and struck out six batters to bring his team-leading strikeout total to 40 on the season. Sophomore Dalton Brown completed the shutout with two scoreless innings in relief.

“We really played well in all three phases,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “Trent [Swart] pitched a great ball game. His ability to come out and put up shutdown innings after we scored early was big. Our situational hitting in the first was very good. After [Jeff] Kremer’s double, we moved a guy with the push bunt and scored him with the sac fly. We came up with a two-out hit in the fifth and we came up with the big inning in the sixth to break it open. All-in-all, our situational approach was very good.”

Back-to-back hits to right center in the bottom of the first catapulted Duke to an early 2-0 advantage. Perez led off the inning with a base hit and proceeded to swipe second for his 11th steal on the year. A double off the bat of Kremer scored the first run of the game, followed by a Betts sac fly to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 margin after one.

A Kremer RBI single in the fifth made it 3-0 in favor of Duke before the Blue Devils opened up the game the following frame. Redshirt sophomore Chris Marconcini led off with a base hit and junior Matt Berezo reached on an error before junior Anthony D’Alessandro drew the walk to load the bases. That brought sophomore Reed Anthes to the plate and the Duke catcher laced a 3-1 pitch to right field, driving in a pair. D’Alessandro scampered home on a wild pitch and Perez knocked in his 13th and 14th RBI on the year with his third hit of the night. Kremer kept the inning going with an RBI single to center before the Betts home run finished off the scoring in the sixth.

An Angelo La Bruna two-RBI single in the eighth accounted for Duke’s final runs of the night.

Right-hander Hunter Gordan (0-3) suffered the loss for Boston College (3-20, 0-9 ACC), allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits in 5.1 innings of work. Shortstop Joe Cronin, third baseman John Hennessy, center fielder Tom Bourdon and first baseman Travis Ferrick accounted for the Eagles’ four hits in the game.

The Blue Devils and the Eagles will wrap up the series Saturday with a doubleheader at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, starting at 1 p.m.
