DURHAM -- For the second year in a row, a group of 30 sophomore Duke student-athletes headed out to Camp Chestnut Ridge in nearby Efland, N.C. for an overnight leadership experience.  Selected sophomore student-athletes from spring and winter sports had the chance to attend the Sophomore Outdoor Leadership Experience (S.O.L.E.).  The focus of S.O.L.E. was to help student-athletes explore and understand leadership in various capacities through activities, both individual and in groups, which challenged their comfort zones.  These activities included high and low ropes courses, zip line, leadership development sessions, fun times by the campfire.

Leadership theories and practices were discussed and applied throughout the retreat activities, and student-athletes were encouraged to think of ways they could use their experiences with their respective teams.  Group sessions, both with teammates and across sports, focused on various leadership topics, such as effective communication and team culture.

New this year was a Blue Devil version of the hit television show the Amazing Race.  Student-athletes were divided into 6 teams and competed in various tasks, which encouraged teamwork, effective communication, and helped student-athletes from different teams get to know each other.  Overall, Fall 2012 S.O.L.E. was a huge success!
