DURHAM -- Duke University participated in a Samaritan’s Feet initiative to raise money and awareness for the organization through a series of events spanning the week of February 11th-17th.

Samaritan’s Feet hopes to give 10 million pairs of shoes to 10 million people in 10 years.  In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of March Madness, the NCAA and Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee have partnered with Samaritan’s Feet to distribute 75,000 shoes to those in need during the Men’s Final Four in Atlanta.

Duke hosted three official Samaritan’s Feet events during the week with Wrestling, Women’s Lacrosse, and Women’s Basketball.  During each event, announcements were made, wristbands were sold, and donations were collected through cash, Duke Cards, and text-to-donate.  SAAC kicked off the week by placing their footprints on a sheet that was hung at each event.

Additionally, at the Wrestling match against UNC, coaches from both teams coached barefoot to draw attention to the cause.  Women’s Lacrosse hung their own sheet with footprints in the shape of a lacrosse stick and wore orange shoelaces during their game against Richmond.  Women’s Basketball hosted Wake Forest and both teams’ coaches coached barefoot and wore orange lapels during their game.  Men’s and Women’s Fencing also took part by hanging their own foot-printed sheet in the form of a saber and accepting donations at their home match.

Maddie Salamone, chair of NCAA Division I SAAC and Duke SAAC, spoke about the experience.

“Samaritan’s Feet is wonderful organization that I’ve had the privilege to work with through Division I SAAC and it was exciting to be able to get Duke SAAC involved as well,” said Salamone.  “Our student-athletes really came together and raised a lot of money for a great cause and had fun doing it.”

Overall, Duke SAAC reached it’s goal of raising over $1,000, which is the equivalent of about 100 shoes.  Additional funds were also raised through text-to donate program at events.
