DURHAM -- The spring semester of "Read With the Blue Devils" has already kicked off with four visits and more there are more to come within the next month. The program is in its 21st year and has allowed third graders to interact with several of our student athletes. The program also provides reading level incentives prizes to the children.

RWBD is teamed up with the Durham Sheriff’s office who begins each visit with discussing good and bad consequences. The sheriff reiterates that our athletes are students as well and had to work extremely hard to get where they are now.

The student-athletes read at least two short stories to the third graders and then open up the floor for some Q/A. The third graders will ask anything from “how old are you” to “describe your day” to “why do you love your sport?”

Several members of the baseball team, swimming and diving team, football team and track and field have participated. The program is a great way for our student athletes to be out in the community and be a role model for these children.
