DURHAM, N.C. - Three Duke student-athletes participated in Duke’s Verizon Read With the Blue Devils program on Monday morning, as cross country senior Laura Stanley, track sophomore Jessica Davlin and junior swim team member Jesse Sandberg volunteered in a third grade classroom at Creekside Elementary.
“The three of us were split into different classes, each having probably around 20 students,” said Stanley. “Each of us read one or two books to the kids and spent some time answering their questions about sports, Duke, reading, school and other things they were interested in hearing about.”
The Verizon Read With The Blue Devils program, in its 15th year of existence, is intended to aid area teachers by providing reading incentives for third and fourth graders in Durham. By reading for 15 minutes for 12 nights, a youngster is able to reach various levels and earn Blue Devil gifts along the way. Among the prizes given out are autographed team photos, posters, t-shirts and chances to meet Duke student-athletes at various functions.
“The kids were very excited to meet us Duke athletes and had a lot of hilarious questions to ask,” said Stanley. “It was really fun to be in an elementary school setting and reminisce over our favorite children’s books! I think we all enjoyed our time there and I personally hope I get a chance to go back.”
