Hey Duke Fans! This is Haley Peters (@HaleyPeters – follow me!!!) checking in from Washington, D.C.!

I’ve been here since May 18, interning in the Office of Congressman David Price, who represents Duke and all of Durham, as well as our friends over in Tar Heel country.

I had plenty to do when I moved in to my room at American University that first weekend.  My mom helped me navigate the Metro , as we did a few dry runs for my commute to Capitol Hill, and we did some last minute shopping for work clothes in Georgetown (finding shoes at my height is not easy!!). We did get to explore a little though, browsing at the famous Kramerbook’s in Dupont Circle.

Since then, the weeks have flown by. My mornings usually start at 6:00 a.m., when I go for a run or get a lift in before the workday starts. I leave American by 8:30 a.m., and take a 40-minute Metro ride, with one line change that brings me to Capitol Hill. I work from 9:30 to 5:30 p.m., every day, alongside four other summer interns (three from UNC and one from NC State).

We did a ton of walking on our first day—learning how to navigate the tunnels that connect the House Office Buildings and the Capitol, preparing to give a Capitol Tour and collecting signatures of Representatives for a letter to the President co-authored by the Congressman.

We also did a lot of answering phones and sorting mail early on, but I’ve since been able to attend hearings and briefings, write memos for the legislative assistants and respond to constituents’ concerns. I’ve met quite a few Duke fans and a whole lot of Carolina fans, while giving tours.  Even the Carolina fans have promised to look out for DWB this year!

This past week, I was able to sit in on a meeting between Congressman Price and other members of the House Democracy Partnership with Liberian president and Nobel Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, -- really inspiring and certainly one of the highlights of my experience here.

Each week I work four days with three days off to explore and travel.  I made it back to the Jersey shore over Memorial Day weekend and spent some time with some friends and with my brother Casey (my other brother Ryan is in Spain for the semester) – got to stock up on some pork roll, egg and cheese bagels and relax on the beach.

And I did a quick trip back to Durham – driving through some scary thunderstorms and tornado warnings. I spent a few minutes with Shay Selby after her second surgery of the summer—if there is anyone who can overcome those setbacks, it is Shay!  I saw EJAK briefly, and spent some time with friends on the soccer team (special shout out to @NatashaAnasi who is tearing it up in Norway right now!). My brother, Casey, was also in town for the men’s fantasy camp, K Academy. It was great to be back in Cameron for a few hours with the likes of Christian Laettner, JJ Redick, Chris Duhon, and so many of their alums.

This past weekend I explored D.C.—walked along the Mall, saw the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial and visited the National Gallery of Art and the Newseum. As a former AP Art History scholar, it was fun to see some familiar pieces—the National Gallery had a cast of Rodin’s “The Thinker” and “The Kiss,” as well as some of Degas’ sculpture, one of my favorite paintings by Winslow Homer, and a newfound favorite of George Bellows.

I’ve got another busy week coming up – plus will see my Dad for Father’s Day and some DWB alums play at the Verizon Center!
