Duke Bests Wake Forest, 2-1, in Spring Match

DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men’s soccer team turned in a strong performance this past Saturday, besting ACC foe Wake Forest 2-1 in the second game of U.S. Soccer's Spring Men's College Program. The Blue Devils move to 1-1 in the competition with the loss coming to North Carolina.

The Blue Devils got goals from freshman Conor Kelly and graduate student transfer Sergi Nus to rally in the second half for the victory. Duke’s one loss in the competition was a 1-0 setback to North Carolina. The team finishes the third installment at Clemson April 6.

Duke returns its top scorer in All-American Daniele Proch and five of the top six from last season. The Blue Devils will look to fill the hole left by the departure of ACC Rookie of the Year Issa Rayyan as well as the graduation of captain and center back Ciaran McKenna.

The U.S. Soccer Spring Men’s College Program concludes with an opponent to be determined in Winston-Salem, April 13. Group One of the South Division includes Clemson, Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest. Group Two consists of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh and Georgetown. They all will meet in Winston-Salem in two weeks in the format below.

1st Place Group 1 vs. 1st Place Group 2
2nd Place Group 1 vs. 2nd Place Group 2
3rd Place Group 1 vs. 3rd Place Group 2
4th Place Group 1 vs. 4th Place Group 2

North Carolina won the inaugural title in 2018, going 5-0-0 and allowing just two goals. Duke was 2-3-0 last season and had a +1 goal differential to come in second place.
