LA LIBERTAD, EL SALVADOR – The Duke cross country team had two freshmen finish in the top 11 of the 2018 NACAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon in El Salvador.
Representing Team USA in the U20 six kilometer race, Amanda Beach and Michaela Reinhart both finished in the top 11 of the 31 competitor field. Beach was the eighth finisher with a time of 21:38.0. Reinhart finished in 11th place and had a time of 22:11.0. The pair were the second and third finisher out of the five United States runners.
“This was a great opportunity for the freshmen to experience international competition,” said head coach Rhonda Riley. “They ran with a lot of confidence and enjoyed their time on the USA junior squad.”
The top three finishers all hailed from Canada. Brogan Macdougall took the individual victory with a time of 20:36.0. The United States’ top finisher was Ashley Tutt who came in sixth place, finishing in 21:20.0.
The pair of Blue Devils finish their outstanding freshmen seasons. Both were named All-ACC after top-20 finishes at the ACC Cross Country Championships and Reinhart was named the ACC Freshman of the Year. The pair also earned spots on the All-ACC Academic team.
Reinhart and Beach will return to help Duke compete at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet takes place in Clemson, S.C., and begins on Feb. 25.
