ELON, N.C. – After a 45-minute delay due to hot temperatures, the Duke men’s cross country team raced to a second-place finish at the Elon Opener, finishing just two points shy of Campbell—the top-ranked team in the Southeast region.

Campbell, the first-place team, finished with 34 team points, with the Blue Devils coming in right behind with a team total of 36. High Point came in third place with 97 points, while UNC-Greensboro (109) and Elon (135) rounded out the top five.

“It’s a good start to the season,” said head coach Norm Ogilvie. “We look forward to two weeks from now when we travel to Winthrop and face a bunch of really good teams from the Southeast region on a course that will host Southeast regional. It’s a very good start to our season and I’m really proud of the way our guys competed today.”

Leading the way for the Blue Devils was sophomore Paul Dellinger, who finished fifth overall with a time of 18:50. In addition to Dellinger, senior Nikhil Pulimood (18:56) along with the sophomore trio of Michael Ungvarsky (18:58), CJ Ambrosio (18:59) and Josh Romine (19:01) comprised Duke’s top five finishers to notch a five-man spread of 11 seconds.

The Blue Devils placed seven other runners in the top 20, with the threesome of sophomore Alex Miley (19:02), freshman Chris Theodore (19:02) and junior Cole Hoff (19:04) coming in at 11th, 12th and 13th respectively. Senior Stephen Garrett finished 15th with a time of 19:14, while transfer Charles Cooper ran a time of 19:24 to place 17th. The freshmen duo of Tom Sullivan (19:36) and Joe Cullen (19:41) finished 19th and 20th to close out the top-20 overall finishers for the Blue Devils.

With today’s results, Duke adds five wins to its total to begin the season and sits at 5-1 in the young campaign. The Blue Devils will have a brief break in action, taking the upcoming week off before traveling to Rock Hill, S.C., to compete in the Winthrop Invitational on Sep. 15.
