DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women’s lacrosse head coach Kerstin Kimel and the Blue Devil program welcomed 10 freshmen to Durham ahead of the 2018 campaign. Defender Gigi Vasile joins the program from Webster, N.Y.

Prior to Duke: Vasile joins the Blue Devils after leading Webster Thomas to the sectional finals as a senior. She was a four-time all-county selection on defense, garnering first team recognition as a junior and senior, and was also tabbed All-Greater Rochester honorable mention as a junior. Also a standout alpine skier, Vasile won three state titles in alpine ski racing and was a four-time sectional champion in the sport.
What is your best lacrosse memory?
GV: Beating an undefeated, nationally ranked team in sectional semifinals senior year.
When did you start playing lacrosse?
GV: I started in first grade playing attack. I hated playing defense (position I play now).
Who has had the largest impact on your life?
GV: My mom. She always has the best advice and has always supported me in the classroom, on the field and every day life.
Why did you choose Duke?
GV: Duke has this amazing energy, from the classroom, to the lacrosse field, to the people who go to Duke. I could not feel it at any other school.
What are your goals for your collegiate career?
GV: Perform well in the classroom and to also have a positive impact on the women’s lacrosse program.
Favorite athlete: Alpine ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin
Hobbies: Jet skiing, water skiing, reading
