DURHAM, N.C. – A day after receiving ACC Defensive Player of the Week recognition, sophomore defender Callie Humphrey was tabbed the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Defensive Player of the Week Wednesday.
Humphrey’s accolade was featured on “IWLCA Weekly, presented by ILWomen” Wednesday evening.
A product of Summit, N.J., and a two-year starter on defense, Humphrey was integral to a stifling defensive effort in Saturday’s 17-10 defeat of No. 11 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. The defensive unit limited the Orange to just the 10 tallies, including only four in the second half.
Individually, Humphrey held one of Syracuse’s leading scorers, Nicole Levy, without a point or a shot in the win. Humphrey matched her career high with four ground balls, guiding Duke to a 21-18 edge in the category, and added a caused turnover.
Through 11 contests, Humphrey paces the Blue Devils in ground balls (23) and caused turnovers (12), with the 23 ground balls already surpassing her total from a year ago.
Humphrey and the 15th-ranked Blue Devils host third-ranked Boston College Saturday in Koskinen Stadium. The noon contest will mark Duke’s inaugural “It Takes A Team – Duke WLax for DCI” game, celebrating a partnership with the Duke Cancer Institute. For more information on the initiative, click here.
