This is Dear Duke, a summer series where our Class of 2018 seniors reflect on their time spent as student-athletes at Duke University.
Where to begin.. I am overwhelmed with emotion right now as I sit down to write this thank you letter. There is truthfully so much to be thankful for after calling Duke home for four of the best years of my life.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of the Blue Devil family four years ago. Thank you for setting the standard of excellence so high. This allowed me to be surrounded by the most intelligent, and hard-working people I have ever encountered, which served as constant motivation for me. Thank you to my professors, and academic staff, for your investment in my education, and in me as a person.
Thank you to my coaches for recruiting me and giving me the opportunity to represent Duke Women’s Lacrosse in the classroom, in the Durham community, and on the lacrosse field. I have learned that there is no greater bond than the Duke lacrosse family, and I am so grateful to have my teammates turn into a lifetime of sisters. I was the captain of this team for two years which allowed me to further advance and diversify my leadership style and character. A quote by Mia Hamm has always stuck with me throughout my lacrosse career:
“Somewhere behind the athlete you’ve become, and the hours of practice, and the coaches who have pushed you, is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back… play for her.”
Duke, you taught me how to balance academics, athletics, and a social life at the most elite level. You helped reveal the type of person I want be, and the vibe I want to give off to the world. You taught me to fiercely chase my dreams, but I have also learned the significance of having fun and laughing along the way. Even when things are stressful and daunting, I have seen the beauty in being youthful and lighthearted. A little spark can leave a mark, I’ll never forget that.
Throughout my academic and athletic experiences, I have encountered many successes and failures. I have learned the most through my failures. Duke, you have taught me the immeasurable power of mental toughness and resiliency. I have learned the strength and beauty in all relationships, and the importance of communication. Lastly, I have encountered the heartbreak of the race against precious time. I am reminded that each day is a blessing, and to never take one second for granted.
I am so appreciative of all the opportunities, challenges, and growth that I have encountered in my time at Duke. If Duke has taught me anything, it is that you must grow through what you go through. I can confidently say that I am a better person today because of my time spent at Duke.
Thank you, Duke.
