DURHAM, N.C. – Blue Devil senior Maddie Crutchfield was selected 23rd overall in the Women’s Professional Lacrosse League (WPLL)’s collegiate draft Monday evening. The second team All-ACC midfielder was one of the top 25 2018 graduates invited to join the WPLL for its inaugural season, which kicks off June 2.
Crutchfield was drafted by the Philadelphia Fire, joining former Duke standout Kerrin Maurer on the squad. Maurer and 2017 graduate Maura Schwitter (Baltimore Brave) were selected in the inaugural WPLL draft last August.
A native of Concord, N.H., Crutchfield ranked among the Blue Devils’ statistical leaders in several categories as a senior this spring. She rounded out the season with the second ost ground balls (24) and ranked third on the squad in draw controls (49), fourth in goals (26) and tied for fourth in caused turnovers (10). Crutchfield was also second on the team in free position goals (6).
One of three team captains, Crutchfield turned in a pair of four-goal performances this spring and reached the 100-draw control mark for her career during the season. A second team Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America selection as a sophomore and a three-time All-ACC honoree, she wrapped up her Duke career ranked fourth all-time in career free position goals (29), ninth in draw controls (130), 17th in assists (49), tied for 18th in goals (98), 19th in caused turnovers (57) and 20th in points (147).

Crutchfield, along with fellow senior Kyra Harney, was also selected in the United Women’s Lacrosse League’s 2018 College Draft last November.
"Crutchfield is an athletic and tenacious midfielder,” said Philadelphia Fire head coach Ricky Fried. “Strong throughout the midfield, she has the ability to create on the offensive end of the field. She is an awesome teammate with a great sense of the game, and we are excited to welcome her to the Fire."
The WPLL’s 13-game inaugural season season starts on June 2 with the New England Command taking on the New York Fight as part of the Impulse Lacrosse Tournament at Our Lady Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md., at 12:30 p.m. and the Baltimore Brave taking on the Philadelphia Fire at 4 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
