DURHAM, N.C. – Blue Devils Callie Humphrey and Olivia Jenner have been recognized with a pair of weekly awards following their performances in Duke’s 17-10 defeat of No. 11 Syracuse Saturday in the Carrier Dome.
Humphrey was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday while Jenner received Brine/US Lacrosse Player of the Week honors Monday evening.
A sophomore defender from Summit, N.J., Humphrey garnered the conference’s weekly accolade for the first time in her career after helping the Blue Devils turn in a stifling defensive effort. The defensive unit held the Orange to just the 10 tallies, including only four in the second half. Tasked with marking Syracuse’s Nicole Levy, Humphrey held one of the Orange’s leading scorers to zero points and zero shots. She also matched her career high with four ground balls, leading Duke to a 21-18 edge in the category, and added one caused turnover.
Humphrey leads the Blue Devils in ground balls (23) and caused turnovers (12) on the season.
Jenner was tabbed US Lacrosse Magazine’s national player of the week for a four-goal, seven-draw control performance in the win over Syracuse. Her first goal of the afternoon came at the 20:05 mark in the first half, giving the Blue Devils a lead they would never relinquish. The junior attacker was one of three Blue Devils to finish with a hat trick, notching her fourth of the season.
Jenner’s seven draw controls gave Duke a 20-9 advantage in the category. She entered the week leading the ACC and ranked third nationally with an average of 8.82 draw controls per game.
The victory over the Orange propelled the Blue Devils upward in all three national polls this week. The squad moved up to No. 15 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Division I Coaches Poll and up to No. 16 in both the Inside Lacrosse Division I Media Poll and the Nike Lacrosse/US Lacrosse Division I Women’s Top 20.
Humphrey, Jenner and the Blue Devils face another ranked foe this weekend, welcoming No. 3 Boston College to Koskinen Stadium Saturday at noon. The ACC matchup also marks Duke’s inaugural “It Takes A Team DCI – Duke Lax Love” game benefitting the Duke Cancer Institute. More information on the initiative is available here.
