DURHAM, N.C.—A host of current Blue Devils are spending their summers with teams in the Premier Development League and National Premier Soccer League as they continue to improve their game heading into Duke’s 2017 campaign. These leagues provide collegiate players the opportunity to play at a high level that has proven to be an important stepping stone to a professional career.

Five Blue Devils in all are playing and excelling for clubs in the league with senior Cody Brinkman and Brian White both earning recognition. Brinkman recently was named to the PDL Team of the Week following his two goals in a victory for North Carolina FC over Tobacco Road FC.

His honor came on the heels of White being voted as one of the top prospects to watch. White owns 13 goals and 28 points overall to lead the first-place New York Red Bulls to a 10-1-0 overall record. He debuted at No. 5 on the list.

Joining White on the Red Bulls is senior center back Markus Fjørtoft. The Norway native has played in all 11 games and 904 minutes overall and helped the Red Bulls to a 10-1 overall record and only 10 goals allowed. The 10 scores are the second fewest in the Mid Atlantic Division.

Sophomore Max Moser is suiting up for first-year team Tobacco Road FC and has played in seven games and 585 minutes overall. The squad is one place behind North Carolina FC in the South Atlantic Division.

Sophomore  Jack Doran is having a strong summer with FC Boston. He has four goals and an assist in his 10 games with the club. The squad is third in the Northeast Division and one point out of second place.

Rounding out the group of six playing in the PDL is Henry Booth with the Westchester Flames. Booth has played in 11 games and 990 minutes overall for a team that has struggled a bit with a 2-10-1 overall record.

Junior Ciaran McKenna is playing the NPSL for the Jacksonville Armada U23s. The Armada is 5-3-2 overall and McKenna has played in nine of the 10 games and amassed 795 minutes. He owns two goals in a 4-0 win for the Armada, which sits in fourth place in the Sunshine Conference Division.

Senior Carter Manley and sophomore Brandon Williamson both are playing with the DC United U23 club. While not an official member of the PDL or NPSL, they will face off against teams from those leagues.

The Blue Devils will host South Carolina in the first exhibition Aug. 13. Duke officially kicks off the 2017 season with the John Rennie Nike Invitational against Central Florida and Fordham.
