DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University rookie goalkeeper Will Pulisic has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week following his two shutouts to kick off his Blue Devil career this past weekend. Pulisic played all 180 minutes of action in goal as Duke won the John Rennie Nike Invitational.
Pulisic and the Blue Devils had a strong start to the 2017 season, posting 2-0 and 3-0 victories over UCF and Fordham, respectively. The freshman keeper made five saves and helped a talented defense hold the teams to a combined 11 shots overall in two games. It marks the first time since 2004 Duke has started a season with consecutive shutouts, while the two clean sheets match the total from last season.
The final line behind the backline of Markus Fjørtoft, Carter Manley and Matthias Frick, Pulisic helped keep the Blue Devils organized over the course of the two games. The Richmond, Va., native is one of 15 goalkeepers nationally to record two shutouts on the opening weekend and one of 32 to not give up a goal.
Duke, 2-0 to start the season for the third time since 2008, returns to action Sept. 1 against High Point. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
