DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University center back Markus Fjørtoft has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week after leading the Blue Devils to a pair of shutout victories last week. The Norwegian native played all 180 minutes as Duke extended its shutout streak to 229:53.
Fjørtoft, playing all but four minutes this season, led the backline in a pair of outstanding defensive efforts last week. In a midweek contest against Elon, he was instrumental in holding the Phoenix to only six shots in the game, including only two on frame. Elon also only managed four corner kicks in the 1-0 setback to the Blue Devils.
Three days later, Duke posted its fifth shutout of the year in a 2-0 road victory at Pittsburgh. The senior captain and the Blue Devils kept the Panthers to only eight shots in the game to pick up three crucial road points and launch them to second in the Coastal Division with nine points.
The senior captain leads all field players in minutes played this season at 1,191 and has contributed three goals on set pieces. Duke’s five shutouts are three more than it had all of last season and are the most since 2013 when the Blue Devils posted eight.
Duke, coming off of a 2-1 road win at No. 10 Georgetown Monday, returns to action Oct. 13 against No. 5 Clemson. The Blue Devils are ranked 19th in the coaches’ poll and seventh in the RPI released Monday morning.
