DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men’s soccer freshman Daniel Wright had a memorable week for the Blue Devils, tallying a pair of goals in as many games, including the game winner over No. 13 Virginia to cap a strong regular season for Duke.
Wright, returning to the starting lineup against Delaware, put the Blue Devils on the board with an unassisted scored just two minutes into the game to help Duke to the 2-1 victory over the Blue Devils in a midweek game.
Three days later, the Michigan native scored arguably his most memorable goal when he came off the bench to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead on No. 13 Virginia in the 77th minute. Wright one-timed a cross from Max Moser from 15 yards out for his third score of the year and second of the week.
In the past four games, Wright has three goals with his first being the game winner at No. 10 Georgetown. He has played in all 17 games with seven starting assignments and ranks third on the team in overall points with eight (3g, 2a).
The win Friday night over the Cavaliers clinched the No. 4 overall seed in the ACC Championship for the Blue Devils. It is the highest finish for a Duke team since it was No. 3 in 2011. The Blue Devils are 12-3-2 overall and will host the winner between Clemson and Syracuse in the ACC Quarterfinals Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast via ACC Network Extra.
