Blue Devils Prepped for NCAA East Preliminary Round

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track & field team will send 23 athletes to the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Round looking to punch tickets to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The event will take place at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

To advance to the national meet in June, the Blue Devils will need to place among the top 12 out of the 48 competitors in each event.  

RELAY SQUAD LOOKING FOR CONSECUTIVE TRIPS TO NCAAS

At last year’s NCAA regionals, Maddy Price, MacKenzie Kerr, India Lowe and Brittany Aveni qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 4x400m relay. Kerr, Lowe and Aveni will look to return this year as members of the relay team alongside Lauren Hoffman and Kelcie Simmons.

BLUE DEVILS COMING OFF PODIUM PERFORMANCES AT ACCs

Five Blue Devils who are slated to compete this weekend garnered spots on the podium at the 2019 ACC Outdoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va.

Kiegan Lenihan captured second place with the third-best toss in Duke history in the javelin (70.97m) while Matt Wisner also claimed silver in the 800m. Lenihan’s mark is currently 11th in the region.

Hoffman, Alex Miley and Nati Sheppard all collected bronze medals in the 400m hurdles, 3000m steeplechase and pole vault, respectively. In the hurdles, Hoffman clocked the second-fastest time in Duke history (58.33) on her way to third place and is 17th in the region. Miley’s time is 13th in the region while Sheppard’s mark is 11th.  

Additionally, Erin Marsh placed second in the heptathlon to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships and will compete in Austin, Texas June 5-8. Marsh posted a school-record performance in the heptathlon with 5,806 points and currently ranks fourth in the country. This weekend, Marsh is slated for the 100m hurdles.

SECOND TEAM ALL-ACC ACCOLADES FOR FIVE COMPETING BLUE DEVILS

In addition to the podium performances, five Blue Devils collected second team All-ACC accolades in multiple events at the conference championships.

Kim Hallowes placed fifth in the 1500m while Lowe came in fifth in the 400m. Lowe will compete in the 400m hurdles this weekend where she is seventh in the East Region.

Rivers Ridout is slated for the high jump competition after his fifth-place finish at ACCs. Aveni and Iyin Battle each placed sixth in the 800m and hammer throw, respectively, at ACCs.

MIDDLE & DISTANCE SQUADS LOOKING TO SHINE

Charles Cooper, Monica Hebner, Sara Platek, Dalton Randall and Michaela Reinhart are set to represent Duke’s middle and distance squads along with previously mentioned Blue Devils this weekend in Jacksonville.

In their last time out, Cooper advanced to the finals of the 1500m and placed eighth overall with a personal-best time while Hebner placed seventh in the 10000m.

STRONG FIELD EVENTS LOOKING FOR SUCCESS

Stefani Vukajlovic and Domonique Panton both own performances that rank in the top 20 in the East Region.

Vukajlovic’s school-record performance of 64.95m in the hammer throw is ranked 10th in the region while Panton’s school-record mark of 12.87m in the triple jump is 22nd.
