DURHAM, N.C.—Duke junior Daniele Proch’s outstanding opening weekend has not gone unnoticed as the striker was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week. Proch netted three goals on the weekend, including the overtime winner against Vermont Sunday.
Proch kicked off his second season as a Blue Devil with a bang, tallying three goals in a pair of victories to lead Duke to its third consecutive John Rennie Nike Invitational title. The trio of scores is just two shy of his total of five in 20 games last season.
The Riva Del Garda, Italy native provided the Blue Devils with a security goal as 10th-ranked Duke took down No. 20 FIU 3-1 in the season opener. Proch, took a pass from Brandon Williamson, and calmly slipped it past the near post to put the game out of reach.
In the final game of the tournament, Proch came up big for Duke, connecting on a penalty kick early and then firing home a rebound from Seth Kuhn 1:59 into the first overtime to keep the Blue Devils unbeaten on the year.
Proch leads the ACC with three goals and is second in points per game (3.00) after two games.
Duke is 2-0-0 to start the year and travels to San Diego for a match with the Toreros Friday night. Kickoff is set for 11:30 p.m., (ET). The Blue Devils, ranked in the top 20 in every poll, return home Sept. 14 against No. 3 North Carolina.
