DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men’s soccer team will kick off an exciting spring slate this weekend when it travels to Charlotte to take on the United Soccer League’s Charlotte Independence. The Blue Devils and Independence are scheduled to play at 7 p.m.

The first match Saturday opens a six-game spring schedule that features two home games and matchups against ACC foes North Carolina, Wake Forest and Clemson. In addition, Duke will host Vaughn SC, a youth academy team out of Maple, Ontario.

The Blue Devils return a wealth of talent both offensively and defensively. Duke’s top seven scorers from the 2018 campaign are back, including All-America second team pick Daniele Proch and ACC Rookie of the Year Issa Rayyan.

Defensively, Duke will miss the leadership and play at outside back of Ciaran McKenna, who is now playing in Scotland for Falkirk. Freshman Aedan Stanley is back after helping anchor the backline to six shutouts. Matthias Frick will look to make that crucial next step as a two-year starter at left back.

Duke’s newest addition is Sergi Nus, who enrolled into Duke’s Master of Liberal Studies program, after transferring from Virginia. He was an All-ACC defender for the Cavaliers and will play his final season with the Blue Devils.

Brandon Williamson, an All-ACC and All-Region choice, will once again be the leader in the midfield with Ian Murphy and Max Moser. Proch and Rayyan will continue their work up top for the Blue Devils after combining for 41 points last season.
