AKRON, OHIO—Jacob Kasper kicked off the 2017 University Nationals wrestling tournament with a fourth-place showing in the University Greco-Roman 98 kilogram division. Kasper is the first of a handful of Blue Devils competing in the annual tournament at the University of Akron and the only one doing so at Greco-Roman.
Kasper opened the day by cruising past Jon Joe Scanlan with an 11-0 technical fall. The rising redshirt senior suffered a hard-fought 2-0 setback in the quarterfinal match against Zach Merrill to drop down to the consolation bracket.
The Lexington, Ohio native resumed his winning ways with a convincing 8-0 victory over Johnathen Dennis to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. He matched that performance, besting Dan Olsen 8-0 to land in the consolation semifinals and guarantee him a spot on the podium.
Kasper's thrilling day continued with another technical fall win, 11-2, over Khymba Johnson of the New York Athletic Club to earn a chance to vie for a third-place finish. Up against Daniel Miller of the United States Marine Corps in the consolation championship, Kasper fell 9-0 to take fourth overall.
A host of Blue Devils continue competition at the University Nationals in the freestyle division. The freestyle competition takes place June 3-4 with wrestling starting at 9 a.m., both days.
