CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –The Duke University wrestling team started the New Year on a good note with a solid showing on opening day of the 2018 Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Clothing. Six Blue Devils advanced to the second day of competition with Jacob Kasper and Mitch Finesilver securing semifinal berths.

Duke sits in fifth place with 49 points, the first time the program has ever been in the top 10 at the end of a day of competition at the prestigious tournament. Joining Mitch and Kasper for the second day of action are Thayer Atkins (125), Zach Finesilver (165), Matt Finesilver (174) and Luke Farinaro (197).

Kasper, ranked fifth nationally, cruised through his three matches, notching bonus point victories for the Blue Devils in each. He started his day with a technical fall and then added a pair of major decisions, including a 10-2 win over No. 7 seed Joey Goodhart of Drexel to land in the semifinals. He will wrestle No. 7 Mike Hughes of Hofstra as he looks grab his second Scuffle crown. Kasper is 16-2 on the year.

Mitch, seeded second at 157 pounds, turned in similar results with a pair of major decisions in his three wins. Wrestling for the first time in a Duke singlet this season, he capped his first day with a 15-3 major of Zack Davis of Navy to set up a meeting with Drexel’s Garrett Hammond in the semifinals.

Atkins, the No. 8 seed at 125, breezed through his first two matches of the day before running into the nation’s fourth-ranked wrestler in the quarterfinals. Atkins fought hard, but Darian Cruz proved to be too much, sending the senior into the consolation bracket. The Texas native will wrestle Korbin Meink of Campbell to start day two.

Zach Finesilver and Matt Finesilver also continue their quests for a spot on the podium through the consolation bracket. Zach upended Anderson Pope of North Carolina with a big third period before falling to top-ranked Vincenzo Joseph from Penn State. The redshirt junior rebounded by pinning No. 8 seed Chad Pyke in just 72 seconds to stay alive.

Matt, seeded eighth, advanced to the quarterfinals with two solid performances to start the day. His run through the championship bracket was stopped by No. 2 Mark Hall of Penn State. Sporting a 12-5 record on the year, Matt will wrestle Cody Hughes of Virginia Tech for a bid to the consolation quarterfinals.

Farinaro rounds out the Duke contingent in the consolation bracket as he rattled off three wins after dropping his first bout of 2018. He benefited from a medical forfeit by Matt McCutcheon and capped his first day of competition with a commanding 8-2 decision over Campbell’s Austin McNeill. Farinaro will wrestle Virginia’s Jay Aiello to start his second day.

Wrestling begins at 10 a.m., Tuesday morning, starting with the fifth round consolation matches. Atkins will open the day for the Blue Devils. Semifinal action is slated to begin at 12 p.m. The Championship Final and medal matches start at 7 p.m.
