DURHAM, N.C.—The NCAA has released its second of four installments of the NCAA Coaches’ Panel rankings as well as the first reveal of the RPI ranking for the 2017-18 wrestling season. A host of Blue Devils are peppered throughout both of the lists with heavyweight Jacob Kasper leading the way in the top five of both.
Seven different Blue Devils are on one of the lists and three garnered spots on both. Kasper is fourth in the coaches’ poll and fifth in the RPI rankings. Matt Finesilver, at 174 pounds, is 14th in the RPI and 25th as voted by the coaches. Josh Finesilver rounds out the Blue Devils on both charts at 20th in the RPI and 32nd in the coaches’ rankings at 133.
Mitch and Zach Finesilver, competing at 157 and 165 respectively, both are in the coaches ranking with Zach making his debut this season. Mitch is 11th and Zach 33rd. The pair is just a few matches shy of the 17 required to be eligible for the RPI standings and will likely earn spots in the second announcement.
The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches’ rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The coaches’ rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class.
To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
The next rankings release on February 22 is slated to correspond with the reveal of conference allocations for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The Blue Devils are in the middle of a busy schedule with six matches in a 17-day span. Duke, 5-5 overall and 1-2 in ACC action, wrestles at Appalachian State tonight at 6:30 p.m. Fans can tune in on APPVISION with a link available at GoDuke.com.
